Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Butt hinge?
Butt door hinges are composed of two identical leaves/wings. One attaches to the moving part and the other is attached to the fixed part of the hinge.
The wings are fixed by a curled barrel – the knuckle – which is what allows the hinge to open.
The reason for Butt hinges popularity is that their design can support more weight than other types of hinges. Steel, fibreglass and wood doors can be heavy and may not be supported properly by weaker hinges.
What are the different types of Butt hinges?
There are four different types of Butt hinges:
- Standard Butt hinges – The most popular type of Butt hinges; mostly used on doors in homes, commercial buildings and other properties.
- Ball-bearing Butt hinges – These durable door hinges are designed for heavier and wider doors.
- Rising Butt hinges – Ideal for rooms with uneven flooring, like deep-pile carpet or thick tiles. The Butt hinge lifts the door for clearance.
- Fire-rated Butt hinges – These hinges are used when installing a fire door. They’re designed to withstand the weight of fire doors and prevent warping.
How many Butt hinges are needed on a door?
The answer to this question generally depends on how big the door is.
Typically, one Butt hinge is required for every 30 inches of door height. So, if a door is 60 inches, two hinges would be needed.
If the door is between 60 and 90 inches, three hinges should be used, and so on.
Also, if a door is between 37 inches and 120 inches wide, adding an extra Butt hinge will offer more strength to support the additional weight applied to the frame.
