Why do under-cabinet LED lights need constant current LED drivers?
LEDs are designed to run on low voltage, direct-current electricity (between 12-24v). However, most plugs in the UK produce 230v, with alternating current electricity.
An LED driver rectifies higher voltage, alternating to low-voltage, direct current. An LED light’s output is proportional to its current supply and is only supposed to operate within a certain current range.
As a result, too little or too much constant voltage can cause light output to vary or degrade quickly due to higher temperatures within the LED.
What should you consider when choosing dimmable LED drivers?
There are three things to consider when choosing constant voltage LED drivers for your kitchen LED light setup. They are:
- Output power - The output power is measured in watts. An LED driver should have the same output power as your LED lights.
- Output current - Ensure you check the current requirements of your LED lights. If using a constant-current LED driver, it needs to reflect that output.
- Output voltage - If you use a constant-voltage LED driver, it must have the same output voltage as your LED voltage requirements. With multiple LED lights, you should add the voltage requirements together to work out the output voltage your LED driver requires.
