Do I need plastic trickle vents on all of my windows?

Before 2022, trickle vents were only needed if you were replacing existing windows or doors that already had one fitted – or, if a new home or extension to an existing house was being built.

Since then, new regulations have been introduced that make sure all new homes have adequate ventilation and that all windows and doors must comply with these rules, whether a trickle vent is included or not.

What are the benefits of a plastic trickle vent?

Plastic trickle vents offer many benefits to your window and door frames.

  • Less condensation - Condensation build-up within the window or door frame is reduced thanks to a trickle vent. This also helps to reduce mould, which can be a common issue in buildings with poor ventilation.
  • Excellent ventilation - A trickle vent helps to regulate the temperature and humidity level of the rooms they’re installed in with steady and controlled ventilation.
  • Improved air quality - Allowing fresh air to circulate throughout a building helps to improve air quality.
  • Energy efficient - Trickle vents help to improve the energy efficiency of a room because of temperature regulation.
  • Improved lifespan - The lifespan of a window or door frame is enhanced with the use of trickle vents because they allow the frame to ‘breathe’. Regular ventilation helps reduce condensation, mould, and prevents a build-up of pressure. This helps to decrease the chance of cracks forming.

How does a trickle vent work?

Plastic trickle vents act as ventilators for window and door frames to allow a small, constant airflow from outdoors. Trickle vents are staggered on the inside and outside of the frame and feature a cover that can be opened or closed to either allow or restrict airflow.

Are trickle vents a security risk?

No.

This is because while trickle vents work to provide continuous fresh air that keeps a home fresh without the noise or temperature changes that come from an open window, they offer a lot more security.

Trickle vents allow you to lock all windows and doors in warm weather and still provide ventilation, increasing the security of your home.
